Prisoners can read Inside Time electronically

Inside Time will now be available to read on-screen for prisoners with Launchpad in-cell laptops at public-sector jails in England and Wales.

A pilot providing access to a digital version of the paper began at HMP Erlestoke on 8 April. A full roll-out to all other adult prisons with Launchpad is due to be completed by early May, according to HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS). Around 12,900 prisoners at 19 prisons have been issued with Launchpad devices.

HMPPS said: “Prisoners will see a bespoke digital version of the publication. This has been developed and designed specifically for HMPPS to ensure security and provide access only to approved content. There is no access to the open internet.”

When Inside Time publishes new content online, this will be made available on the digital version in prisons. The MoJ added: “While prisoners already have access to the paper version of Inside Time, the digital version will make this more accessible and will supplement wider Launchpad content.”

In addition to the 19 prisons providing in-cell Launchpad laptops, a further 12 offer landing kiosks – but these do not allow access to the Content Hub or Inside Time.

Some privately-managed jails already provide prisoners with an electronic version of Inside Time, the UK’s national newspaper for prisoners and detainees.
