What’s Happening? – A guide for new prisoners

What’s Happening

Life in prison is very different to life on the outside. If you’re preparing for your first prison term, or if a loved one has just been jailed, it’s natural to be fearful.

You can survive it – thousands of people do – but it helps to know what to expect.

InsideTime, in collaboration with propa tings and David Kendall of Loud and Clear Productions CIC, is pleased to present What’s Happening – a small guide to help you get through your time in jail.

The author of What’s Happening is a prisoner known as JJAL. He is serving a life sentence at a jail in England – so he knows what he is talking about. He describes different issues that the first-time prisoner will face: remand, sentencing, family and friends, cells, daily routine, transfers, dealing with staff and other prisoners, workouts, work and education, food, and relaxation. There is even a section looking ahead to release.

If you have a loved one inside, why not download What’s Happening from our website in pdf format, print out a copy, and post it to them?

JJAL is proud that his work is being made available to families across the country. He says: “All I can say is thanks to everyone that had a hand in helping me, either by talking to me, giving me equipment or just inspiring me. I’m grateful and appreciate you. Hope you enjoy the handbook and it helps in some way.”
