Black History Month on National Prison Radio
For Black History Month 2021, we’re introducing a series of brand-new interviews with people who made the UK their home in the decades after the SS Windrush made its famous voyage to the UK in 1948 – bringing hundreds of migrants from the Caribbean.
After World War II the British government encouraged people from Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad, Antigua, St. Kitts and other countries from the British Empire to come and live in the UK. The war had created labour shortages, and migration was invited to help bolster the workforce.
The ‘Windrush Generation’ refers to people who arrived in the UK from Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1973 – people who have significantly influenced British society.
In Windrush Stories, National Prison Radio will be speaking to people who have made a mark on UK life and culture. It will include both first-generation migrants and also their children and grandchildren.
The series kicks off with comedian Angie Le Mar. She rose to fame on the Black comedy circuit of the 1990s, supporting established names like the late Felix Dexter, Curtis and Ishmael and Leo Chester. She’s now a regular on BBC London and appears on ITV’s Loose Women.
Also to come are actor and animator Ace Ruele and music producer Marc Mac; who pioneered with the breakbeat group 4hero since the 1990s.
As well as Windrush Stories, we’ve got a Black History Month flavour to all your favourite music shows. We’ll have weekly artist profiles in the Rock Show, while in NRG we’ll have an amazing mix tracking the development of music from Motown to Makina.
In Free Flow, Brenda and listeners will be collaborating on lyrics to mark Black History Month. We’re going to have a special interview with Rowetta, vocalist with the Happy Mondays, talking about the Black artists who influenced her and talking about being a Black female artist in a white, male music scene.
We’ll also have big interviews in our breakfast show Porridge, and special features on Street Heat, NPR Fresh and Bob and Beyond.
Windrush Stories will broadcast on Tuesdays and Fridays at midday and 6pm throughout October.
