Skin to make NPR debut
Skin, the lead singer from legendary rock band Skunk Anansie and presenter on Absolute Radio, is one of a host of big names to appear on National Prison Radio during Black History Month. The band made a huge comeback at this summer’s Glastonbury Festival, almost 30 years after they formed. She’ll be interviewed on the Rock Show during October to talk about the music she loves and the artists that are important to her.
Other special features for Black History Month include a big interview with Sir Trevor McDonald, the Trinidadian-
British newsreader, and a special music show about the revolutionary year of 1968 with Craig Charles – star of Coronation Street and Red Dwarf, and a host on BBC 6Music.
Shows across National Prison Radio will be marking Black History Month, which takes place every October as a way of recognising and celebrating the contributions of Black people to the economic, cultural and political life in the UK.
Watch out for a special documentary about the history of BBC Radio 1Xtra, featuring some of the voices who first appeared on the network at its launch 20 years ago. And there will also be a special programme looking at 35 years of Black Members of Parliament.
National Prison Radio presenter Richie told National Prison Radio about the role Black History Month plays in his life: “As a child growing up my parents would tell me it’s Black History Month, I would be lying if I said it felt like an important thing. But as I went through school, I started to learn about history. They talked me through slavery and how it came about. Many years later, Black History Month has real meaning.
“For me, it’s a time to recollect how life has been for Black people in the UK. I guess some might ask why we would want to remember such a loud time, but I think we should never forget our roots. Forgive but never forget.
“Black History Month is not just for Black people, I believe it’s for everyone. Instead of segregating I think it brings everyone together to remind us that we are no different, we are one race, the human race.”
