The Warm Up on npr

Lockdown getting you unhealthy? Want to break a sweat but feeling unmotivated? If you’re sitting in your cell and want to get your heart racing, get ready for The Warm Up!

My name’s Ali and you may have heard me on National Prison Radio hosting shows like Freeflow and NPR Friday – back when I was in jail. I’m out of prison now, but this month I’ll be back on the airwaves boosting your spirits with The Warm Up, NPR’s new motivational health and fitness show.

Back when I was in prison, I used to worry about staying mentally and physically fit. I tried to keep active by doing workouts in my cell, but there were days where I wasn’t really able to get motivated and I didn’t know what to do. Even if I did get gym time it could be an intimidating place, especially if you’re a beginner like me. That all gave me ideas for this show…

Every week I’ll be bringing you easy-to-follow guided workouts from the Cell Workout team, which is run by former prisoner and author LJ Flanders. After we’ve got your pulse raised with a 15-minute workout, I’ll be sitting down with inspirational guests like grime star and workout champ Lethal Bizzle to find out the secret behind his hit song ‘Rari Workout’.

I’ll also be hearing how rapper-turned-footballer Don Strapzy’s team of ex-pros and former prisoners became the biggest Sunday League team on YouTube. Other guests include Nottingham’s Jawaid Khaliq, the first ever British-Asian boxing world champion. In between the interviews I’ll also be setting you some exclusive guided workout challenges, so get ready to be tested!

After all of this I’ll bring you my #motivationalmix where I play upbeat tracks so you can cool down or carry on exercising. And to finish it all off we’ve got a chilled-out meditation session done by Anthony, host of NPR’s breakfast show Porridge. By the end of the show you might be sweaty and sore, but you’ll definitely have a smile on your face.

All you need is yourself and your cell. See you there!

The Warm Up is on National Prison Radio every Monday morning at 10am. It’s repeated Mondays at 5pm and Sundays at 11am.
