Merry Christmas, not

Merry Christmas, not

Christmas comes but once a year and we poor saps are stuck in here. I can almost guarantee that I am going to have a miserable festive season this year because I will be spending it in prison. I love Christmas when I’m on the out, the colours and gaiety, the presents, the food and the children, everyone happy… it’s great!

But having spent a previous Christmas in HMP Birmingham, back in the early part of the century, I now know the drill behind the walls of HMP, and it is a poor imitation. Some prisons, I have heard, really do make an effort, but putting up decorations and a tree on a prison wing is like putting a silk hat on a pig, they just do not belong together. I will still be here in the New Year and will write in and let you know how it goes! Until then, try and have the best Christmas you can in the circumstances.
