All change for Warren Hill locks after worker accidentally takes keys home
An employee at HMP Warren Hill reportedly took a full set of keys home after work, triggering what has been described as a “major security alarm”.
The Sun reported that all the locks and keys at the Category C men’s prison in Suffolk were having to be changed as a result of the mistake, incurring an estimated £500,000 cost for taxpayers. The newspaper said that the incident had been recognised as an accidental error, and that the employee was distraught at the impact of their oversight.
Changing all the locks is the standard protocol for such incidents, to guarantee that full security continues.
Prison management were reported to be perplexed as to how this could have happened because the person should have been fully checked as they left, and the keys discovered.
Suffolk Police said the incident was reported to them at once, and they were making enquiries. A Prison Service spokesperson told The Sun: “Incidents like this are extremely rare. The prison has remained secure throughout and affected locks are already being replaced.”
