Life in prison can often feel noisy, busy and stressful. It can be hard to switch off, relax or get a good night’s sleep. That’s where And Breathe comes in.

And Breathe is a show on National Prison Radio all about mindfulness and meditation. The aim is simple: to help you relax, clear your mind and feel a bit more in control of your day.

The show is presented by NPR producer Sam, who brings a specially chosen chill-out playlist, and meditation expert Emily. Emily works in prisons, so she understands how difficult it can be to find peace in a loud and chaotic environment. She guides you through simple meditation exercises designed especially for people inside.

Each show explores the mental and physical benefits of mindfulness and meditation. You’ll learn easy techniques that can help you calm your mind, deal with stress and improve your sleep. The show starts with the basics and gradually introduces more advanced ideas, along with guided meditation sessions you can follow along with.

If you practise regularly, meditation can help you handle difficult situations better, manage your emotions and find moments of real calm.

One person who knows this is Main Man Ali, who you can hear weekday mornings at 7am and 11am on NPR’s breakfast show, Porridge.

“Mindfulness and meditation helps me calm down my mood, stop stressing and focus on myself. When you’re breathing in and out, you’re clearing the stresses from your mind and it helps me get in the zone.

It’s really helped me in situations where my mind is clouded. If you take a moment to stop and do some mindfulness, it can really change your day and even help you sleep.”

You can listen to And Breathe every Tuesday at 5pm and 10pm on National Prison Radio.

There are also short practical meditation sessions repeated every day at 6:45am and 11:30pm, so you can start or end your day with a few minutes of calm.

Tune in, take a moment for yourself… And Breathe.
